MITI refines the reserve of Pekema to bring 50,000 imported vehicles a year
KUALA LUMPUR – The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) will refine the proposal of the Malaysian Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association (Pekema) to increase the number of used imported vehicles from 35,000 to 50,000 units per year.
The Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said, his party will make an assessment based on the latest data with Pekema and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) for that purpose.

"This is among the issues raised because the current level of 35,000 units (import vehicles) does not give an idea of what has happened in the past 30 years.
"The Ministry will refine and will work together with Pekema to find a justification for why this stage needs to be looked back.
"So, we will make a decision based on the latest data and at the same time, this issue needs to be discussed with the MOF," he said after inaugurating the 42nd Annual General Meeting at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center, here today.
In that regard, Tengku Zafrul also called on Pekema experts to take advantage of the improvement of the guidelines for the inauguration of the new permit import (AP) company for electric vehicles (EV).
According to him, the equivalent engine capacity exceeds 1,800 cc for cars and exceeds 250 cc for motorcycles, a temporary exemption is given for fully imported EV vehicles (CBU) until December 31, 2025.
"Take this opportunity to identify and get the right as an exclusive importer of famous EV brands to be brought into and marketed to Malaysia. This includes the planning of local installation (CKD) in Malaysia," he said.
For the record, Zafrul said, based on MITI statistics, the number of EVs approved and imported by open AP companies since 2020 until October 2023 is 729 units.
"This figure includes 533 units of new EV and 196 units of used EV and it is only 0.23 percent of the total number of vehicles imported by open AP companies during that period.
"So, actually there is still a lot of room for Pekema experts to increase the acceptance of EV vehicles in our country," he explained. - KOSMO! ONLINE
